With your family practice escaping using your HOME EXIT DRILL.

Where there is a fire in a house, the house fills with toxic smoke long before heat and flame can spread.
Most people who die in fires are killed by toxic smoke. Many are never touched by flames.
Most people who die in fires die at night because they are asleep.
A smoke alarm is your safeguard against this danger because it senses the presence of smoke at a very early stage and sounds an alarm.
A smoke alarm gives you time to escape before the smoke has made it too difficult.

HOME ESCAPE PLAN

Draw an accurate floor plan of your
home or unit.

SECURITY VERSUS SAFETY

In domestic family dwellings, it is necessary to assess security versus safety with regard to those doorways and windows that are used as escape routes from the building.

From a fire safety aspect, security should be designed to keep unauthorized persons from entering the dwelling but allow adequate escape routes for occupants in an emergency.

PREFERRED SECURITY DEVICES

The main types of security devices (other than guard dogs) used by occupiers of domestic family dwellings are either.
1. Electronic security (burglar alarms etc. which may be local alarms only or monitored by security companies) or:
2. Physical barriers (security screens, bars, grilles, etc.)
The preferred type of security from an occupants safety aspect is electronic security which doesn't turn the domestic family dwelling into a prison.
