RURAL FIRE SAFETY

CAUGHT IN A BUSH FIRE ?
If you are caught in a bushfire in a rural setting please follow the recommended safety advice below . . . don't panic!

WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE TRAPPED IN A CAR

If you are in a car and a fire is approaching you . . . don't panic.
Park the car in a cleared area, close all windows and vents.
Turn off the ignition, Turn on your headlights so rescuers can see you.
Get down inside the car as low as you can - below the window level.
Cover all exposed skin - a woollen blanket or woollen seat covers are very good for this purpose and should be carried in your car when travelling in the bush.
If you have a mobile phone call 000 and wait for the fire to pass and help to arrive.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE TRAPPED ON FOOT

The same basic rules apply if you are on foot . . . don't panic.
Never try to escape from a fire by running uphill, it is a known fact fires travel faster uphill, always move across or down a slope.

Never try to run or jump through a wall of flame unless you can see it is clear on the other side, unless it is small with flames less than one metre in height. . . this should only be done as a last resort.

If you have a mobile phone call 000 and advise them of your location and situation.
