Are your children totally safe when they are home alone?


Although many people consider their home to be a safe and secure environment where our children can feel safe and content there often occurs circumstances beyond a persons control which can result in your home becoming an unsafe place for your children.
It is very important that any type of safety procedure begins in your own home.

ANSWERING YOUR TELEPHONE
Never tell the person calling your address.
Never let the person calling know you are at home alone.
Always tell the person calling your parents can't come to the phone and you will take a message for them.
Installing an answering machine enables your children to hear who is calling and then decide to answer or not.
Never answer the phone by saying your first name or last name.
If the person calling asks for you by name, ask them to whom they would like to speak.
If the person calling asks you “what number is this”, always reply by asking the caller what number they are calling.
Hang up immediately and notify your local police and the phone company if you receive any obscene phone calls.

ANSWERING YOUR DOOR
At night always be sure to leave an outside light on.
Never open the door before you ask and know who it is.
Always keep your security screen door locked when answering the door.
Always install a peep hole and teach your children to always use it before they open the door.
If the person is a stranger or someone you don't trust do not open the door under any circumstances.
If the stranger does not leave, call a neighbour, a trusted adult or your local police.

IF SOMEONE TRIES TO GET INTO YOUR HOUSE
Call the Police straight away.
Call your neighbour or an adult you can trust.
Run out your back door or another door into your neighbours house and bang loudly on their front door.
Always have all emergency numbers by your phone and be certain your children know who to call and what to do.
